Coriander Seeds

Coriander seeds are the dried, spherical fruits of the Coriandrum sativum plant. While the fresh leaves of this plant are known as cilantro (or fresh coriander), the seeds offer a completely different flavor profile and are treated as a spice rather than an herb.

Unlike the leaves, which some find "soapy," the seeds are warm, nutty, and citrusy. When crushed, they release a distinct aroma reminiscent of orange peel and mild pepper.

Coriander is a global staple, acting as a "bridge" spice that helps blend other flavors together.

  • Spice Blends: It is a primary ingredient in curry powder, garam masala, and ras el hanout.
  • Roasting & Grilling:Often rubbed onto meats or tossed with root vegetables.
  • Pickling:The whole seeds are frequently used in pickling brines for cucumbers and onions.
  • Brewing: It is a traditional addition to certain beer styles, most notably Belgian Witbiers, to provide a bright, floral note.

Coriander loses its potency quickly once powdered. For the best flavor, buy whole seeds and grind them as needed using a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder.
